Getting your site onto Google
How do I get my website on Google?
If you have a new website, first thing that you would want is to get indexed by Google. Google will send its robots, (called Googlebots) to your website and go through your site's pages.
Sometimes it takes time for the Googlebots to crawl a new website, what you can do to expedite the process is to add your website on Google Webmaster Tools and submit a sitemap.
How can I get on the first page of search results?
Getting on the first page for certain keywords is what SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is about. First, you have to decide what keywords you want to get ranked for. Then, you have to create pages that are relevant to that particular keyword.
Sprinkle the keywords on the page, but don't over do it. There are many elements you can change in a page. By making your page relevant to the keyword for each of these elements, you'll have a page that is perceived highly relevant by Google.
It helps to understand that Google ranks pages, not websites. So think of your website like a book, and each web page as a page in the book, that is tailored or relevant for a keyword, or a group of associated keywords. When someone searches a keyword, google is trying to return the page that that is most relevant for that keyword.
Also, you have to make sure you get lots of votes, or links to your site from other websites and web properties. By using keywords as anchor text for links and pointing those to your website, this increases the ranking power of your site.
Links are considered as votes by the search engines. The more votes, the better your chances are in getting on the first page of Google results.
