What is Hosting?

Overview

When you boil it down website hosting is about having somewhere to ‘store’ your website, domain names and provide email functionality.

You could think of web hosting as similar to leasing a real shop, or office-space, in a shopping mall. The webhost manages the “mall” and ensures that the space you lease is accessible to your customers/visitors at all times.

Initially the space you lease is bare. It is up to you to have a shop name ( Domain Name Registration) and something to go in the bare space ( a website).

At you Hosti  “mall” we provide you with a workshop (called cPanel), which is included in the hosting fee. You can use the free tools in cPanel to help you design your website if you don’t already have one.

 cPanel has other great tools in it as well which you can use to start an online e-commerce store, send out a newsletter, or create a blog or a forum. cPanel even tracks visitors to your website.

The Three Essentials

1.  A Domain Name
A unique web address that gives ‘directions’ to every other web-enabled device, on how to find your website.  Looks like www.myname.com.au .  At Hosti we can register your domain name, but more importantly we will really help you manage the registration  and assist you with keeping your records up to date – particularly when renewal is due every few  years.

2. A Web Host
Your  hosting company rents out space on their remote computer (“Server”) for you to store your website.  Their server is capable of handling all requests for access to pages from your website at any time and on any day of the year. Our Hosti Servers have a proven record of secure and reliable website delivery for thousands of satisfied clients.

3. An actual Website Design for Uploading

You, or your webdesigner, design and create the website -most commonly a  series of ‘hyperlinked’ pages with text, images and whatever else you want the world to see, and  that can be ‘read’ by a Web Browser (eg Firefox or Internet Explorer etc ).
